Last week I referred to putting a beer in my son’s lunch . I have received many inquiries about that so here is the real story. That son is now 24 years old, so it has stood the test of time.
My husband and I enjoy good beer which means it is never in a can. The grandparents were in town taking care of the boys while we went away for a few days and they brought there own beverages. We also never had canned sodas in our house, so having cans in my refrigerator was very unusual. Grandparents can get away with such things, so there you have it—cans in my refrigerator. My son was all excited about the Lemonade in the cans. What I did not know was that somehow beer cans got in there too. I suppose Grampa bought some beer in cans.
My son was going to a camp that summer and I had to make his lunches. I always put juice in his lunches but I thought I would surprise him with a can of lemonade since they were left behind. Well, about noon that day, I received a call from his camp counselor. He obviously did not know how to handle this situation at all. He said, “Your son has a beer in his lunch.” I did some quick mental acrobatics and realized what had happened. I just started to laugh hysterically because it was so funny to me, which confused the young counselor even more. He said, “So what should I do with it?” I said, “Drink it.” The devil got in me and I just couldn’t resist. He was a little taken aback ,so I took pity on him and told him I was blind and I mixed up the cans.
I don’t remember how my son reacted. I was concerned that he would be scarred for life. I don’t think so, but I will ask and let you know.
Being a blind parent has many challenges that are much more significant than confusing cans in the refrigerator. It helps nobody to get all caught up in such a silly mistake. I am sure we all have these stories and I would love to hear them.
