Accessible Fitness, more choices for more people

Fitness has always been a concern with regard to both mental and physical health regardless of age, gender, or any other variables that make each one of us unique. And for those in the blind community, fitness is every bit as much—if not more—important.

Exercise for the visually impaired is something that should be incorporated into a weekly, if not daily, routine for a variety of reasons that are both similar and different from people within the sighted community. For those with total loss of sight as well as for those who are low sighted, a lack of regular exercise can bring on a host of other issues, including weight gain, sluggishness, and perhaps worst of all for many, insomnia or a circadian rhythm that has been thrown completely off track.

Joe Simek has owned and operated Dragonfly Yoga Studio and Retreats in Doylestown, PA with his wife Alexis Ridge-Simek for more than a decade. Jason Castonguay

The First official Connecticut Idol for Fox TV, Jason dazzled a stadium audience of 10,000 in Las Vegas before returning to Hartford’s Bushnell Memorial Auditorium as special guest star performer with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra before an audience of 3,000. His musical career began when he was discovered playing the entire National Anthem on a toy organ at the age of 3.  His formal studies continued at the Hartt School of Music and progressed to Central Connecticut State University’s music program where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in music performance (Jazz Studies) and Management Information Systems (computer technology).

Extremely active in his personal life, at home Jason enjoys his recording studio and office, along with a variety of hobbies, including his extensive collection of Western Electric telephones, a digital Pipe Organ, and a flock of pet chickens, to mention only a few.  He enjoys frequent travel all over the country, including ocean cruises to perform and to visit with friends. He has co-hosted radio programs in Atlanta and in 2014 performed a concert on a cruise ship in the Bahamas. 

Jason has performed hundreds of concerts locally and throughout the country.  He performed with the New Britain Symphony Orchestra for many years during and after college.  He is a performer for all occasions and is particularly sought after for his renditions from “The Great American Song Book”—appealing to audiences of all ages.  An expert in computer technology, Jason has been employed by such corporations as AT&T and Apple, Inc.  

Jason performs regularly at local restaurants and churches and is often called upon to perform for private affairs.  He has entertained for dignitaries, including guests at the Governor’s Mansion on several occasions.  Jason, though considerably humble, is admired for not only his extraordinary music talent, but also for his engaging and genuinely warm personality.

Jennifer Kern - Fitness Specialist

Jennifer is a passionate yogi, a Pilates method preacher and has an infinite love for all things that connect the mind and body. She’s obtained her Pilates mat and equipment certification through Pilates Academy International as well as her 200hr Yoga teacher certification through Yoga Alliance accredited studio Sonic Yoga. Growing up training in gymnastics and dance, movement has always been her medium. She uses this background to create unique sequences and routines meant to feel good and flow well in the body.

While fitness was her gateway, Jennifer knew it was only one piece of the healthy life pie. After years of dieting, and seeking external results it was when she stopped and asked herself “why” that true transformation began. Jennifer now runs a health coaching business based on the principals of love and compassion for oneself. Through her 3 month program she helps people transform into the healthiest and most vibrant versions of themselves.

Edye Fisher-Discount - Fitness Specialist

Edye Fisher-Discount has been developing and leading fitness programs for over 15 years.  She became a certified Pilates instructor and advocate several years ago after personally discovering Pilates was an effective and safe alternative to crippling back pain and back surgery.

After practicing basic mat Pilates, Edye was amazed by how much stronger she felt.  Having avoided back surgery, Edye became a Pilates advocate and enrolled in the Physical Mind Institute.  A certified professional in the The Method Pilates, Edye believes that with the right instruction and focus, each individual has the capacity to improve their strength, gain balance and improve flexibility.

In 2010, she began working with the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to develop a basic Pilates
program suitable for people living with MS, and then began collaborating with The Breast cancer society and other specialty groups, to help people with specific needs.

Shana Maleeff - Fitness Specialist

Shana Maleeff, MA, RD, CDN, ACE-GFI, received a BS in Nutrition from Penn State University and an MA in Nutrition Education from Immaculata University in Pennsylvania.  She works in New York City coaching clients on nutrition, fitness, weight management, disease prevention, and lifestyle modification to help them actualize their best selves. She has been teaching group fitness classes at Crunch Fitness in Manhattan since 2007, including spin, sculpt, TRX, and urban rebounding. Shana is the expert nutrition columnist for's fitness center and has been quoted in magazines like SELF and Cosmopolitan. Her passion for health and fitness is contagious and she wants to share it with you!

BlindAlive is especially close to Shana's heart because she has a mother with RP, who is very connected to the low vision and blind community.  For years, Shana and her mother Lynne have been working together to come up with workouts that were effective and easy for her to follow, given her circumstances.  Finally, with BlindAlive, Shana is able to create these exercise programs that are catered specifically to this exact population and deliver a workout that is descriptive and easy to follow.  She is so grateful to be involved in such a meaningful project that is bringing you the gift of better health and fitness!
